DAY 01 : Depart the USA, Arrive in Panama

Upon arrival in Panama City, you will be transferred to your downtown hotel. Balance of the day at leisure. Overnight.

DAY 02: Discovering the city

Panama City is mostly known for the famous Panama Canal, and its international status as one of the world’s leading financial centers. A quick glance at its tumultuous history, however, will show the city is far more than sleek skyscrapers and a canal. On a comprehensive city tour we first visit Panama La Vieja (Old Panama), the city’s original settlement founded by Spanish conquistadores in 1519 and ruthlessly ransacked and burned by the pirate Henry Morgan in 1671. We next drive to Casco Viejo, a location easier to defend where the city was moved after Morgan’s attack. Today Casco Viejo is a polyglot neighborhood of colonial forts, churches, wide cobblestone streets and Old World architecture, mostly constructed during the failed French attempt to build the canal. After touring Casco Viejo, our comprehensive tour wraps up with a visit to Miraflores Locks, where you will watch ships transiting the canal and learn about its fascinating history.

DAY 03: A train journey back in time

In the 16th century Spain’s King Charles I established the legendary Las Cruces Trail, a route across the Panama isthmus mainly to transport plundered Inca gold from the Pacific to the Atlantic coast. Five centuries later, we retrace the trail as we head for history-drenched Portobelo, departure point for galleons bound for the Old World. We will walk in the footsteps of pirates and conquistadors as we inspect narrow colonial streets, ancient forts and the Customs House, where gold was once stacked awaiting shipment to Spain. Our guide will also recount local legends including Sir Francis Drake’s, who died offshore in 1596, and that of the revered Black Christ. In the afternoon, we return by train to Panama City for an unforgettable ride beside the Panama Canal. At the end of this eventful day we will transfer you to the new Gamboa Resort, located on the banks of the Panama Canal. (B)

DAY 04: Gamboa

Breakfast. The Gamboa Resort enjoys a favored location beside the canal and in the very heart of Soberania National Park. This allows for an endless array of activities and tours that can be enjoyed just a few minutes from your room. Among optional full-day tours, a visit to an authentic Embera Indian Community stands out as the most popular.

DAY 05: Gamboa

The Gamboa Resort enjoys a favored location beside the canal and in the very heart of Soberania National Park. This allows for an endless array of activities and tours that can be enjoyed just a few minutes from your room.. The onsite canopy tour is also popular as are short hikes in the surrounding forest, kayaking, bird watching, and nocturnal boat tours. Or you may opt for a relaxing day by the pool followed by a massage or treatment at the spa. (B)

DAY 06: Gamboa-Boquete

For decades the thriving, mountain town of Boquete has received praise from residents and visitors alike as one of the world’s healthiest, most peaceful places to live. Founded by Central European immigrants in the early 20th century, the region is an uninterrupted reel of bucolic scenes—cattle grazing in rolling pastures, fertile coffee plantations, farmers are tending orchards of blossoming flowers and strawberries, towering volcanoes, and cloud forests teeming with tropical birds. After a free morning in Gamboa, we transfer you to the airport for a short flight to the town of David where our local representative will meet you on arrival and transfer you to your Chiriqui Valley hotel. This afternoon, we’ll hike the trails at Finca Lerida, a bountiful private cloud forest reserve that is the protected habitat of many colorful tropic birds, including the elusive quetzal. Evening free. (B)

DAY 07: Boquete

Today we’ll hike the famous Los Quetzales Trail at the base of extinct Baru Volcano, Panama’s highest point. This is a spectacular excursion into a pristine cloud forest that gives a unique opportunity to observe the large number of plants growing in this environment, and also to watch exotic birds in their natural habitat. The afternoon is free to horseback ride, try an exhilarating canopy tour, or just relax and join the locals in Boquete to taste their celebrated coffee (you’ll want to take a pack or two homes). Overnight. (B)

DAY 08: Boquete-Panama

Free morning to continue enjoying the area on your own. In the afternoon return to David airport for return flight to Panama City. Evening is at leisure for last minute shopping and sampling the city’s vibrant nightlife. (B)

DAY 09: Depart Panama

This morning you will be escorted to the airport for your departing flight. (B)
